Life: Celebrating A Birthday While Sheltering In Place
Having to be far away from family is difficult enough. This year we will be celebrating M’s 6th birthday while sheltering in place.
Here in Florida, a few places are slowly being opened to the public, and, though that is exciting, it is also concerning. As bad as we would like for things to return to normal, they never will. Everything we once knew will change. Therefore, having to get together and birthday parties will look completely different.
I realized last year that birthday parties are more for the parents than they are for the kids. You see, we go all out our way spending tons of money on things that really don’t matter to our kids as much as it does to us.
Quality Time.
For my kids, you can give them one or two of their favorite things, their grandparents and aunts and a few friends and they are good. It doesn’t take much to make them happy. Sometimes we as parents forget that. We forget that it’s the simple things.
Simplicity.
When it comes to our kids they don’t need a bunch of “stuff” from us to prove that we love or care for them. One thing that this shelter in place has taught me is that we have everything we need … right at home. This year M will not have the luxury of being with her friends for the ultimate pool party. M is high-risk because she is asthmatic and we have to make sure that she stays safe.
M understands that her birthday this year will be different and, to be honest, she is happy that she is finally turning 6 years old. When I asked her what she wanted for her sixth birthday, her answers brought me to tears.
- L.O.L. Doll Surprise Doll House
- L.O.L. Doll Surprise Camper
- ROBLOX Characters
- Grandma
The last one choked me up. I was quickly reminded of how much toys and material things don’t matter to our kids as much as we think they do. This little girl just wants to see and be with her grandma for her birthday.
I told her we would see what we could do to get her grandma here but she would have to be patient. In the meantime, we are planning a Zoom Birthday Party Bash for her and focusing on letting her know how much we love her.
Please help me in wishing Miss M a Happy 6th Birthday!
Have you had to celebrate your child’s birthday while sheltering in place? What did you do to celebrate?
