What You Need To Know Before Starting A Blog
Starting A Blog
If I had a dollar for each time someone asked me about starting a blog, I could resign from my full-time job. Don’t get me wrong — I love it when you (readers) ask me questions about how I create content. It is my daily reminder that no matter how small or insignificant it may seem to me, it is very important to others.
Recently, a friend from college asked me about starting a blog. She is new to all of this, and it inspired me to share my tips with her and others. Who knows — this might turn into a mini-series. If that is something that you are interested, in please let me know in the comments below.
- Determine your niche. What do you want to blog about? What is it that you want to share? Think about the things that you are passionate about. Start to figure out who your ideal readers are by taking the time to do the research. This will make it easier for you to create content that your audience will love.
- Select your blog platform. You will want to look at the best blog sites that are available to determine the type of platform you want to use. I personally recommend a self-hosting blog platform. There are free options, but they might have limitations as to what you can do. Are you comfortable with WordPress? Maybe you like the look and feel of Squarespace. There are plenty of choices available, so be sure to select the one that is best for your needs.
- Choose a domain name. A domain name is the website address that you want your audience to visit. It is also the name in which you want to be known by online. For example, my domain name is tiffanydbrown.com. It is my unique address on the internet. If you can’t settle on just one, purchase the ones that you may be considering. You don’t want to have the perfect name available and wait too long and someone else buys it before you do. Your domain name will be yours as long as you continue paying the annual fee.
- Find a web hosting account. Next, you will need to find a platform that will host your blog and a company that offers reliable hosting services. This is important because you will want a blog that has great functionally and performance. Your web host is a crucial part of the puzzle when it comes to your blog, so please take the time to find a great hosting provider.
A few providers that work well with self-hosted websites are Bluehost, BigScoots and I use ShowIt for my site. Keep in mind when going through these steps to keep your end goal in mind. All of the steps listed above are very important to help your blog get off to a great start.
If you are still on the fence about starting a blog, it’s OK. These things take time, but I will offer one suggestion: Start thinking of your categories and try drafting a few blog posts. Therefore, when you are ready to go live, all you have to do is copy and paste your content onto your website. Starting a blog is a commitment but, once you get the hang of it, you will love having a place to share all the things you are passionate about with the world.
Your blog is your space.
It can be whatever your dream it to be. More importantly what you are passionate about needs to be shared. Draft a plan of action and have a date in mind. This will help you to stick with a timeline to help you start on track in getting your blog live for everyone to see.
