Qualifications You Need to Have to Become a Social Media Influencer

Influencer

Within the realm of social media marketing, influencer marketing is a popular choice for many brands and companies. Social media users with a dedicated group of followers and fans can position themselves as experts in a particular industry or field and as a result, are highly sought after by brands to help promote products and services. Influencer marketing is one of the fastest-growing ways brands can quickly connect with their audience and reach new customers. Social Media Influencers are capitalizing on this exchange and earning sizable income by helping brands sell their products and services. While it seems simple, becoming an influencer takes time and dedication, just as any career would. Here are 5 basic qualifications you need to become a social media influencer.

What Qualifications Do You Need to Have to Become a Social Media Influencer?

Social Media Influencers are Knowledgeable About The Industry

A successful social media influencer understands social media platforms, their follower’s interests, behavior, and pain points. Influencers are aware of what their fans are looking for when they come to their social media accounts. They also have a strong understanding of how best to promote products and services. Knowledgeable social media influencers use their platform to continually add value. They are able to effortlessly do so in such a way that promotion doesn’t feel like a hard sell. Rather, they understand how to weave in brand information organically and in a way that is comfortable and realistic to their audience.

There’s a lot of give-and-take that comes with social media marketing. One of the most important qualifications you need to become a social media influencer is knowing when to implement each; this knowledge comes in time and as you gain more experience.

Influencers are Also Willing to Learn New Things

What you don’t know about social media marketing as a whole, you need to be ready, willing, and able to quickly learn. The world of social media is an ever-evolving and constantly changing place. Being comfortable with new platforms and being a first-adopter, is key. Staying on top of what is new in the industry is important. You’ll want to get in on the ground floor of new technology as it is introduced.  A willingness to learn new things is one of the most imperative qualifications you need to become a social media influencer.

An Influencer Can Adapt to New Technology and Situations Easily

Because social media changes constantly, another important social media influencer trait is being able to adapt and change as needed. Being set in your ways and unwilling to go out on a limb and try something new will be a detriment to your career. Success doesn’t mean just logging on, posting, commenting, and collecting a check. A true social media influencer treats the influencer role as an actual job. Reading books, listening to podcasts, and consuming content about social media marketing should be a regular part of what you do as an influencer.

Similarly, if a client books you for a campaign and has specific rules about your deliverables, now is not the time to let ego get in the way. Being flexible is an important qualification when it comes to becoming a social media influencer. That’s not to say that you’re going to let a client walk all over you; you just have to be willing to adapt to changes to the campaign (within reason) and roll with the punches if necessary.

Confidence is Key Qualification For a Social Media Influencer

Confidence, in anything we do, no matter the industry, can mean the difference between landing the sale or getting the ‘thanks, but no thanks.’  The same holds true for social media marketing. As an influencer, having faith in a product or service you’re trying to promote is the best way to exude confidence when sharing it with your audience. That is why many influencers will suggest partnering with companies and brands whose products you love and use regularly. It’s easy to promote something you love. If you’re representing a product that is new to you, that you’ve never used before, however, honesty and authenticity are key.

Confidence in your ability to share and encourage others to try something new is important. This is something that either comes naturally or doesn’t, but don’t let that stop you. There are countless ways to help you build your confidence as an influencer. You can do this through mentorships, taking online courses, reading relevant books, and working with a coach.

An Influencer Should Have an Engaging Personality

A successful social media influencer has the ability to draw people into their world. Creating content isn’t just about posting curated photos and moving about your day. Influencers tell stories that draw their audience in. They create a world where people are waiting to see what they’re up to next. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate plan; just simply sharing the ins and outs of an aspect of your life or you’re whole life (how much you share is up to you) is enough to draw people in. Society is inherently nosy; people want to see how others live. Reality television wouldn’t be a thing if this weren’t true. Being likable and having an engaging personality are key qualifications you need to become a social media influencer. Of course, you’d don’t need to be ‘on’ all the time, but you do need to at least be interesting.

Becoming a social media influencer is not for the faint of heart, nor is it easy. There’s a lot of behind-the-scenes work that goes into it if you’re going to be pursuing it as a career. It’s important to note that it’s not all cute Instagram photos and hashtags. From start to finish, it’s a job. Pitching, negotiating, poring over contracts, and adhering to set guidelines from the brand is only the beginning. Creating the content, getting the aesthetic just so, writing, editing, re-writing, re-shooting photos; it’s all part of the job.
